"Exploring Texas Freedom Colonies" will give workshop attendees an opportunity to explore the founding of the 500+ self-reliant, unincorporated communities that were established following the Emancipation of Texas slaves in 1865, and their unique places in our state's history.
Workshop leaders will assist attendees in developing strategies for identifying and studying the histories of Freedom Colonies in general, and in their local communities in particular. Attendees will also receive guidance in building a TEKS-compliant Lesson Plan that incorporates the full scope of the Freedom Colony phenomena, while also focusing on the specifics of the administrator's/educator's local community, thereby enhancing Texas History and Social Studies curricula at Middle and High School levels.
Attendees will earn a total of 10 CPE credits - 6 credits for the Friday session, and 4 credits on Saturday. CPE credits are awarded through the TEA Region 5 Education Service Center.
Workshop Presenters include:
- Andrea Roberts, Ph.D. - University of Texas at Austin, School of Architecture
